Artist images of fashion icon Leigh Bowery

...are part of the exhibition 'Discount Body Parts' at De Hallen Haarlem (Netherlands) where the work of US filmmaker and pioneering video artist Charles Atlas will be on show until 3 June 2012.

The oeuvre of Charles Atlas (born in Missouri, 1949) is represented with installations such as Charles Atlas' early 1970ies experimental work with the medium film as part of the choreography of a live performance - known as the 'mediadance'. The mediadance was developed in collaboration with Merce Cunningham (1919-2009) and accompanied by ambient music by John Cage (1912-1992). This early interdisciplinary video-performance-dance-music work is installed in a room-filling adoption. Another installation is 'Portrait'; it is made of footage of Charles Atlas' video portraits of performer and fashion icon Leigh Bowery (1961-1994).

"Atlas' explicit visual style, interdisciplinary approach and collaborative artistic practice have gained him a distinguishing position within the visual arts." writes De Hallen Haarlem.
