Friedrich von Amerling is indisputably one of the most important and renowned Austrian artists. Some of his paintings are known to the public from various permanent displays of collections or from exhibitions about the Biedermeier period or portraiture. However, there has yet to be a complete exhibition of his decade-spanning œuvre. The Österreichische Galerie Belvedere has chosen Amerling’s 200th birthday on 14 April 2003 as the occasion to remedy this omission. A selection of approximately eighty paintings will present the artist’s development from his beginnings in the 1820s up to his late works in the 1880s. A catalogue will be published in conjunction with the exhibition with each of the exhibited works illustrated in colour.
