fig.: fashion by Oumou Sy

Oumou Sy from Senegal is one of the most important African designers. She knows all techniques for making fabrics, coloring them and fashioning: her art of making clothes begins with weaving, dying, stitching. Oumou Sy combines fabric with materials like metal and vinyl and connects traditional African dessins with Western elements and motifs - sometimes the products have their own humor.

The designer makes Haute Couture, Prêt-à-porter and costumes for African Queens/Kings. Oumou Sy had several presentations/exhibitions: Expo 2000, Piazza San Marco in Venice, Millenium Dome in London, Broadway in New York, Louvre in Paris, Altamoda in Rom.

Oumou Sy established a fashion school in Senegal for emerging new talents. And among other things, the international fashion week SIMOD is organized by her. For this engagement in new structures of the African fashion world the designer is awarded with the "Prince Claus Award". more culture>>>
