LIONS FOR LAMBS
fall 2007

Academy Award®-winning director Robert Redford's new provocative new film addresses some of the biggest questions about life today: What is risk?  What is courage?  What is engagement? And what does taking a stand really mean when it comes to our media, our politicians, our youth? The story takes place on three fronts: in a Congressional office (Presidential hopeful Senator Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise) tries to manipulate TV journalist (Meryl Streep) with a story about a new war strategy), at a West Coast University (idealistic professor Dr. Malley (Robert Redford) confronts a privileged but blasé student (Andrew Garfield) to use his potential), in a battle in Afghanistan (two of Dr. Malley’s former students, Arian (Derek Luke) and Ernest (Michael Peña), debate living and surviving). Each of these fronts influences the other.

Costume designer Mary Zophres had to make sure that “...the clothing I designed really disappeared!” She explains: “The clothing in this film is entirely about embodying the characters and should be one with them and not stand out. Tom Cruise is emblematic of the government, so he wears what you would expect a well-dressed U.S. Senator to wear, with a navy three-piece suit. Same with Meryl Streep. She’s a reporter, so she doesn’t wear anything that would jar your attention.

Mary Zophres most recently designed “No Country for Old Men” for the Coen Brothers, “Smokin' Aces” and “Bewitched.” She designed two films for director Steven Spielberg:  “The Terminal” and “Catch Me If You Can,” for which she won a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Costume Design. Zophres has also designed costumes for the Coen brothers beginning with their award-winning hit, “Fargo.” Their collaboration continued on the films “The Big Lebowski,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” “The Man Who Wasn't There,” “Intolerable Cruelty” and “The Ladykillers.” In addition, Zophers has worked with the Farrelly brothers, serving as the costume designer on the comedies, “There's Something About Mary,” “Dumb and Dumber” and “Kingpin.”  Her other film credits include “Moonlight Mile,” “Ghost World,” “View From The Top,” “Any Given Sunday,” “Paulie,” “Digging To China” and “Playing God.”
