LOTHAR BAUMGARTEN exhibited at the First Part of EDIT!

EDIT! Photography and Film from the Ellipse Collection
(one of the most important art collections existing in Portugal) at CAV Centro de Artes Visuais. First Part 6 May - 24 June 2007, Second Part 30 June - 9 September 2007

Catalogue with reproductions of the works and texts by Albano Silva Pereira, Delfim Sardo and João Rendeiro > www.cav.net4b.pt

Lothar Baumgarten's centre theme is the representation of the Other and its difference. Lothar Baumgarten uses words, photographic images, films and installations critical to the social processes of cultural representation. During the 1960s Baumgarten, born 1944 in Germany, conducted a study of the anthropological and ethnographic museums and their installation processes as ideological processes, finally taking residence amongst the Yanomami Indians in 1978. EDIT! shows works full of irony in best German Kulturkritik tradition dated mostly between 1968 and 1971 (the period when the artist was a student of Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf). Baumgarten shows in different ways the relationship between Nature and Culture based on irrelevant, paradoxical or clearly fabricated situations.

The exhibition will show the works of international and Portugese artists (12 artists at the First Part, 22 artists at the second part). You "...can find the inventory and research of the body, of documentary, the city as place of negotiation, of confrontation and recognition, gender and identity issues and the search for the political as well as the poetics of subjectivity," Albano Silva Pereira, Director Centro de Artes Visuais.
