The spoons for practical lovers

In February 2009 the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago has collected design pieces for the ones who are in love; one of the pieces is the 'Big Love Spoon' by the Italian designer Miriam Mirri (born 1964 in Bologna, living in Milan), created for Alessi.

The designer is very practical and has a spirit for the romantic side of life; on the MCA Store site you can read her comment on the spoons: "...allows two people to eat together from the same bowl without encroaching on one another. I hope that this object, designed with high quality and a poetic standard in mind, expands our emotional universe." The 'Love Weeks' in the MCA Chicago hold on; in March 2009 the love spoons are still available in the shop mcachicagostore.org.

A seating carpet for "listening to music, playing and look children right in their eyes"

On Miriam Mirri's website you will find objects she has designed for table, kitchen, pets accessories, lights, bath accessories... Under 'complements' Miriam Mirri presents the 'seating carpet', developed from the technical concept of a handmade hat realizing system: a long ribbon made of wool, cotton and jeans sewed together with a whirl shape. The design supports the idea to make "Holiday at Home".

Question: What was your inspiration for the carpet?

Miriam Mirri: I was interested in describing daily life inside homes, in finding out a new way to interact forgetting hierarchies, rediscovering the pleasure of learning and experiencing through the game stimulating, at the same time, curiosity and fantasy. The philosophy that stands behind this carpet was to mean it as the center of possible activities between people.

As a huge hat covering the floor, the carpet has a soft backrest, for someone resembling a change sitting, able to create a defined and intimate space dedicated to play. “We all fall down” as in the nursery rhythm for reading, hugging, listening to music, playing and look children right in their eyes.

The design technique is based on that used for hats, a long wool hatband rolled up and sewed as a whirl starting from the top.
