FASHIONOFFICE INSIGHT

Privacy in the 'Cloud'

Fashionoffice has outsourced its IT since 1996. Today, the data-business calls this praxis 'Cloud Computing'. In IT-magazines you will find two burning questions: "Has the 'Cloud' reached the quality that the data - a capital of a company, are in secure hands? Is the privacy of the data ensured?" Now, in this article I will report from the experiences we have made during the last 15 years with Cloud-services.

'Cloud Computing' means that parts of a company's capital - like in the case of Fashionoffice editorial articles, the results of statistical measurements, the delivery of advertising, the email correspondence and the privacy of all data streams are given into the hands of others. It is the same like giving your money to a bank where it is safe and 'works' further.

The 'Cloud' is not only a short living trend but a necessity as it is not possible for small or media sized companies to update the IT as fast as it changes. In future, only big players, companies with the core business 'IT' and telcos (telecommunications companies) will have the financial power and technical know how to manage their computer equipment outside the 'Cloud'. For all the others, the rules of the 'Cloud' are match-winning.

That's the reason why we at Fashionoffice have chosen IT-specialists for the web technique, the statistical measurement, advertising and for the transfer of our own data streams to reach a high privacy level (in the framework of the Cloud-rules) for our contacts, magazine visitors, and the methods and strategies we employ to create our 'products' (editorial articles), which is not only an essential capital of every journalistic media - privacy is a basic requirement for journalism and therefore journalists are as part of a functioning democracy extra protected by law in civilized countries. For companies, a lack in privacy would mean that the cloud enables corporate espionage. But beneath the democracy- and cash-interests (though, who wants to be the slave of somebody else) counts privacy to the international basic rights of every human being.

Find on this page the statistical data of the magazine's most read articles and the keywords which led users to Fashionoffice in May 2011. The data are anonymized - we don't know who the persons are behind the numbers in the log files or statistical measurement tools. And our wish is that even in the permanently rising 'Cloud' the users of Fashionoffice are further on in future only anonymized numbers!

Some ideas about the security of the capital 'data' in 'Clouds' are published under the paragraph 'Data as personal property' on fashionoffice.org/press/2011/mediainfo6-2011.htm.
